Olde Earth Castings is proud to present this cold cast statue of the Stalingrad Sniper, Vasily Zaitsev.
Vasily Zaitsev was a renowned Soviet sniper during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II. Born in 1915 in Yeleninskoye, Russia, he initially served as a clerk in the Soviet Navy before volunteering for front-line duty during the German invasion. Sent to Stalingrad in September 1942, Zaitsev quickly distinguished himself, reportedly killing 225 enemy soldiers. His tactics, including camouflage and deception, were highly effective in the brutal urban warfare of Stalingrad, where snipers played a critical role. One of the most famous stories about him is his supposed duel with a German sniper named Major Erwin König, though the historical accuracy of this event is debated. The Battle of Stalingrad, fought from August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943, was a turning point in the war, marked by intense combat and significant psychological impact on German troops due to Soviet snipers like Zaitsev. Awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, Zaitsev later established a sniper school to train new snipers. His legacy endures in books, films, and documentaries, symbolizing Soviet resilience and tactical ingenuity.
